Artist Mandy is making waves

Monday, July 4th, 2016

Mandy Billington, 41, from Penkridge, is currently studying a Foundation Degree in Contemporary Art Practice, but has still found the time to start her own business and exhibit at the Open Art show at the Shire Hall Gallery in Stafford.

Mandy tells us what is means to her to be chosen to exhibit at Open Art show. “The Staffordshire Open Art exhibition is unique because any artist, who lives, works, studies or who was born in Staffordshire is invited to submit their latest work for inclusion in the show.

“I am really proud as two of my pieces have been chosen to be included this year, a contemporary ceramic bowl and a painting of Mevagissey harbour in Cornwall.

“The show is really beneficial to artists like myself as it gets your work some recognition, and a foot in the door, which is really important as I am just about to finish my degree and start my own business.”

Here Mandy tells us about why she chose to study higher education at Stafford College. “I came along to an open day and was amazed by the quality of work on show and it really inspired me, so I knew this was the place for me. “The tutors are incredibly knowledgeable and really encourage you to think outside your comfort zone. “I have learned much more than creative skills, some of the modules are business-based and has taught me a lot about employability and the skills you need to set up your own business.”

Finally, Mandy tells us about her plans for the future. “I have already rented a space at the Gainsborough Art Works in the north of Stafford. “It is a really exciting but nervous time for me, I am taking everything I’ve learned and are putting into practice. “I will be making my own unique pieces, predominantly ceramics, covering a variety of subjects including the impact of waste in the sea on marine life to domestic drudgery. “As well as displaying finished work, most of my designs will also available to buy.”

The Staffordshire Open art show is running from 14 May – 3 July where Mandy’s work will be on display.
